Vince Lombardi: A True Leader

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

I’m a big Simple Truths fan. I find a lot of Mac Anderson’s books inspiring and motivational. Last night I sat down and read from cover to cover the latest addition to my library: What It Takes To Be Number One.

This book is told from the point of view of Vince’s son, Vince Jr. His famous speech, What it Takes to Be #1, has continued to inspire and motivate countless numbers of people. The Lombardi Philosophy transcends football. His powerful words capture the fundamentals of success – in any sport, any business or in any life.

After reading this book, I found myself truly motivated and anxious to spearhead anything. I played organized basketball throughout my teenage years and I wish I was exposed to this type of enthusiasm and dedication. I’ve had some great coaches in my life (especially my AAU coach).

It’s very important to WANT something. And you need to have that drive, that dedication.

Vincent Thomas Lombardi (June 11, 1913 – September 3, 1970) was an American football coach. He was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers of the NFL from 1959-67, winning five league championships during his 9 years. Following a one-year retirement from coaching in 1968, he returned as head coach of the Washington Redskins for the 1969 season. Lombardi’s record in the post-season was 9-1, the loss coming in the first of those games, the 1960 NFL championship.
