This was sent to me in an e-mail. Thanks for sharing Mom.

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ‘I know why.’

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, ‘People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?’ The Six-year-old continued, ‘Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.’

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you’re not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

As my 2008 comes to a close today, I would like to recap on some of the milestones and events that really stick out in my mind.

First, I’m thankful for my excellent health. January 1, 2008 I started to get back in shape and eating healthy. I lost 30 pounds and feel fantastic. 2009 will be an even better year for my health and fitness. My goal is to reach below 10% body fat. I was rarely sick and had the common cold maybe twice. Keeping a good diet does wonders for your body.

Second, my freelance work took a huge boost. 2008 marked my highest income for this side business. Granted it takes a lot of my free time on nights and weekends, but it’s totally worth the networking and experience that is gained. I already have 2 projects lined up for the beginning of 2009 and finishing up a huge project left over from 2008.

Third, family & friends. My parents moved into their new home this year - leaving memories of my childhood in South Plainfield. My grandparents moved in with them, leaving their house in Elizabeth. I sure miss that house too. New home, new memories and so far it’s been phenomenal. I made some new friends (from the Dominican vacation) and was able to keep in touch with my “old” ones.

What will 2009 bring me? Everyone makes resolutions for the new year. Last year mine was getting back into shape which I was successful in doing. This year I would like to a) get my body fat to less than 10%, b) spend some more time with my music and produce another album, and c) maintain my successful side business as a web developer freelancer.

I wish everyone a happy and healthy 2009 and best of luck in this tough, economic struggle.

I launched my new music website a couple weeks ago. I decided to use Wordpress and I created my own template for it. The free downloads have a custom tracking application I built so I can keep track of how many downloads I receive. The color scheme uses earth tones. I love blue so the combination is based off of that. Most of the graphics I created use the reflection look, made popular by Apple.

I welcome you to check out the new look and download my music for free. http://music.steveambielli.com/

Last night I went to Clyde’s in New Brunswick for dinner to celebrate my friend Leo’s birthday. There were 9 of us, all dressed nicely ready to have some martinis and exotic foods. I took a look at the menu and was intrigued at my selection. Kangaroo, Buffalo, Elk, Antelope and Llama. Wow! I was excited to try them all!

I shared the kangaroo appetizer with Tom. It was delicious! I ordered the ostrich for my entree. It came with a side of mashed potatoes and tomatoes. I was able to try everyone else’s selections. Although it was a very expensive evening, it was totally worth the experience. I would definitely go there again.
